The Price of a Key: Dama ben Netina and the Jewish Law

The Price of a Key: Dama ben Netina and the Jewish Law

When Jewish scholars debate what it truly means to fulfill the biblical commandment to "Honor your father and your mother", they do not point to a Rabbi or a prophet. Instead, the Talmud (Kiddushin 31a) points to the legendary true story of a non-Jewish man from Ashkelon named Dama ben Netina.

The story of Dama is the ultimate masterclass in measuring the value of filial piety against the distraction of extreme wealth.

The High Priest's Breastplate

During the 1st century, the Rabbinic Sages traveled from the Temple in Jerusalem to Ashkelon. They were on an urgent mission: they needed to purchase a specific, incredibly rare gemstone to replace a missing stone on the High Priest's breastplate.

They arrived at the home of Dama ben Netina, a wealthy merchant who owned the exact stone they needed. Desperate to secure the gem for the holiest site in Judaism, the Sages offered Dama an absolutely astronomical sum of money—a literal fortune that would have secured his family's wealth for generations.

Dama agreed to the sale. The Sages waited in the courtyard while Dama went inside his house to fetch the gemstone from the family safe.

The Sleeping Father

When Dama entered the room where the safe was kept, he saw his elderly father sound asleep on the bed. However, the father’s foot was resting delicately on the small chest that held the key to the safe. Alternatively, some traditions say the key was placed directly under the father's pillow.

There was no way for Dama to retrieve the key without waking his father up from a peaceful sleep.

For almost any other human being, the decision would be obvious: gently wake the father, apologize, grab the key, and become immeasurably rich. But to Dama, the peace and dignity of his father’s rest were worth more than any amount of gold on earth. Waking his father—disturbing him for the sake of a financial transaction—was a violation of respect.

Dama walked out of the room empty-handed. He informed the Rabbinic Sages that he could not complete the sale.

Believing Dama was just negotiating for a higher price, the Sages aggressively increased their monumental offer. Dama refused, explaining that he would not disturb his father's sleep for all the money in the world.

The Heavenly Reward

The Sages left empty-handed, utterly stunned by the man's profound respect for his father. According to the Talmud, heaven itself noticed Dama's staggering sacrifice. The following year, a perfectly red heifer (an incredibly rare animal mandated by biblical law) was miraculously born into Dama's herd. The Sages returned and paid him the exact astronomical sum he had forfeited the year prior.

The story of Dama ben Netina survives millennia later as a terrifyingly beautiful question: What is your limit? If you had to choose between extreme personal success and letting your father sleep peacefully, which would you prioritize?
