Home Safety Audit

The home they have loved for decades can slowly become filled with hidden hazards as their mobility or vision changes. Walking through their house with this checklist is a deeply practical way to honor them and protect their independence.

Instructions: Print this list, grab a clipboard, and walk through each room of the house.

1. Entryways & Hallways

Clear WalkwaysRemove all clutter, shoes, or cords from the main walking paths.

Secure RugsRemove throw rugs entirely, or tape them down securely with double-sided rug tape.

LightingEnsure there is adequate lighting right at the entrance, inside and out.

2. Bathroom

Grab BarsInstall secure grab bars inside the shower/tub and near the toilet.

Non-Slip MatsPlace non-slip strips or mats inside the tub and just outside of it.

NightlightsInstall motion-sensor nightlights to illuminate the path from the bedroom to the bathroom.

Shower SeatingProvide a sturdy shower chair if standing for long periods is difficult.

3. Kitchen

AccessibilityMove everyday items (dishes, heavy pots, favorite foods) to waist-level shelves to avoid reaching or bending.

Appliance SafetyEnsure the stove and oven have easy-to-read dials. Check for any gas leaks.

LightingAdd under-cabinet lighting to illuminate countertops for safe food prep.

4. Bedroom & Stairs

Bed HeightEnsure the bed is easy to get in and out of (feet should rest flat on the floor when sitting on the edge).

Bedside SetupA sturdy nightstand with a lamp, phone, and flashlight easily within reach.

Stair RailsHandrails must be firmly attached on both sides of any staircases.

Stair VisibilityEnsure stair edges are clearly visible, adding contrast tape if needed.
