Confucianism: Obedience alone is not filial piety (CLASSIC OF FILIAL PIETY, CH. 15)

Confucian Wisdom

CNF-013
父有爭子,則身不陷於不義。故當不義,則子不可以不爭於父……從父之令,又焉得為孝乎!

— CLASSIC OF FILIAL PIETY, CH. 15 (諫諍)

"The father who had a son that would remonstrate with him would not sink into the gulf of unrighteous deeds. Therefore when a case of unrighteous conduct is concerned, a son must by no means keep from remonstrating with his father… Hence, since remonstrance is required in the case of unrighteous conduct, how can (simple) obedience to the orders of a father be accounted filial piety?"
Modern Translation & Meaning

"Loving your parents does not mean going along with something wrong. If a parent is about to do wrong, speak up kindly and respectfully, because you care."
